Touring Our Wonderful School Versión 360 METADATA

This activity was designed to motivate my students to speak to everybody in front of a video camera.  Lower learners often find it difficult to speak spontaneously, so these kind of activities let them prepare for speaking by planning what they are going to say.

It was also a great opportunity for the students to describe their school.

Let’s talk about directions!

This final activity was designed for practice urban map-reading and related prepositional phrases (e.g., next to, across the street from).  Students enjoyed asking and answering questions related to the given map.  After that, they worked in groups because they allow students additional practice by encouraging use of the target language.

Our dream house

A written assignment based on what students have learned in class.  A Power Point presentation was used to make the description of their dream house.  It was a collaborative work that involved students working in small groups.  They had the opportunity to teach each other by addressing misunderstandings and clarifying misconceptions.

Our First Interview

Time to put what we learned into practice…

My students had the opportunity to talk about themselves in a fun  and practical way.  They created some digital books using STORYJUMPER and their creations are below:

English Day 2016

The English Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm past August 24th and 26th.  All the elementary students were involved in a Vocabulary Contest and the winners got a great prize.  They enjoyed playing different offline games and trying to do their best to get the highest possible score.
The Flag Raising Ceremony was celebrated on the 26th and the best students of the English Classes received a certificate.
The English PIF (Individual Formation Plan) Students were the leaders of the different activities and as usual, they did an excellent job.  Congratulations my dear students!

Valentine's Day Activity

“Valentine’s Day or Saint Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14 by many people throughout the world. In the English-speaking countries, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine’s cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of ‘valentines.” – Wikipedia

There are a lot of ways to experience other cultures without having to take a long trip.  Learning a foreign language is one of those ways because it opens the doors to a better understanding of different cultures, backgrounds and traditions.

Students watched a video related to Valentine’s Day celebration around the world, and then made some Valentine’s cards to their classmates.

Chat with students around the world!

It is sometimes difficult to get students to use language in class, especially in a meaningful way.  However;   there is a strategy that encourages the use of written and oral language to communicate in an authentic way and it is the chat platforms.  This year, students had the opportunity to use Google Hangouts as a practice scenario of improving English language skills by interacting with native English speakers in a genuine conversation.

Our students had the possibility to interact with students from New Jersey in USA,  thanks to Joseph J Filoramo; Spanish teacher of Roxbury High School in that city.

It is an excellent activity if we consider how it helps to develop students’ comprehension, speaking, written and vocabulary skills whilst interacting with English speakers.

Día del Amor y la Amistad

Love and Friendship Day in Colombia is just another St. Valentine’s Day and it is celebrated in September in our country. You don’t need to be in a relationship to celebrate this day and this is the good part of it; this celebration is for everybody. One of the most famous activities to celebrate this day is to play what we call “Secret Friend”. That’s why, my students decided to play this game, with some variations. This is what we did: First, we put all of the students’ names in a bag and they took turns drawing names. The name that each one drew was the name of his/her secret friend. After that and for a couple of weeks, each student posted messages in English for his/her secret friend and on a special date, in front of everyone, they revealed the name of his/her secret friend. Kids enjoyed this activity so much and the most important thing is that they could practice English in a different way. Good job!

Writing about my vacation....

This is my students' first attempt to write about something that happened in the past.  They started by writing short and simple sentences in simple past.  Great job!

Letters from Caymans Islands
